I s'pose that was why you liked The Fountain. Sometimes I like that familiarity - we watch things because we know the ending and it gives us support. We know that in the end the hero will get the girl and that the villain will go to hell and it's that formula that keeps us there. Sure there's the odd movie that goes against that, that we might like but I think it's not as common for a reason.
my only problem with it is that, the good guy doesnt always finnish first. the hero doesnt always get the girl (in fact he hardly does) and the villan always wins and people die and thats how the real world is. and i know the purpose of movies is escapism too but still, i guess i look at film more as art then an avenue for revenue.
